Day and time First Thursday of the month 10:30 am Continuous

The Contact Group meets on the first Thursday of the month, at 10.30 am, at the Horizon Hotel on Ayr Sea Front.

The venue has been chosen for ease of access.

The group is aimed at members who are now less able to attend OiR activities than previously, or just feel like joining with like minded older members. They are a wonderful, articulate, warm, humorous group with a wealth of life experiences.

Many members still drive, but not driving shouldn’t deter anyone from joining – we can arrange to collect you and take you home again.

Help is given to Margaret, in the running of the group, by Nan Currie, Irene Bell and Mary Kane.

CONTACT GROUP NEWS Posted 22nd February 2017

The group meets on the first Thursday of every month, from 10.30am until 12.00 noon at The Horizon Hotel, Ayr.

We are still continuing to meet monthly, and enjoyed a Group Christmas Lunch at the hotel on the day of our December meeting. Later that month, three of our members, Betty, Charlotte, and Dot celebrated their 90th birthdays – what an achievement.

We had a lovely surprise in January when Charlotte McLellan treated us to an excellent lunch to celebrate her 90th birthday – despite missing Matt terribly she was still anxious to treat us.

Poor health led to several members missing the February meeting but they will return as soon as they are fit enough to manage. Eilidh Morris is still in hospital and we miss her company greatly.

Although we are a close, supportive group, any OIR member who would like to come along to our meetings is welcome to test us out – we cater for both ladies and gents.

Mary Kane, a great helper in our group, has had major heart surgery. Her husband Joe is trying very hard to curtail any over-activity on Mary’s part. Mary had planned to visit us at our February meeting but nurse’s visit timing prevented this. We will be happy to have her back when she is fit enough.

Nan Currie, another of our helpers has, I am happy to say, rejoined us after her major surgery.

Contact Group (monthly meetings)   Posted 27.05.16

Dear fellow members

The Contact Group for OIR’s older members, unable to get out and about as they once were, has now been meeting for several years, on the first Thursday of every month, at the Horizon Hotel on Ayr’s seafront. Adequate car parking space is available in the seafront car park across from the hotel for those still using cars. Other members share taxis or use dial-a-bus, or are transported to and from meetings by family members.

This still remains very much a group that I feel proud to be involved with, and I know that David, Mary, Nan, and Irene, who help with the group, feel the same way. What great characters the members are, what great courage they display, even after serious illnesses we find them ‘bouncing back’ and returning to meetings at the earliest opportunity.

Although several group members have been members of OiR for many years, even founder members, others have only joined OiR since moving to the Ayr area and have felt welcomed and have assimilated well as has been proved by their regular attendance at meetings.

Although the men tend to sit in a separate group and talk ‘men’s’ topics, many still find time to circulate and spend time sitting with and talking to other members. The ladies in the group also have much to share, on all sorts of topics, with other members. Laughter is plentiful and the opportunity to socialise has clearly a very positive effect in helping combat loneliness.

Recently we lost a very much valued member of our group, Matt McLellan, who will be sorely missed not only by the group, but especially by Charlotte who remains a stalwart for us.

Please join us if you would care to. The Horizon Hotel makes their lounge area, with its comfortable seating and occasional tables, available to us. For a small charge they will provide teas/coffees or orange juice etc., and scones, to those who wish them – it is up to the members to choose what they want.

Anyone wishing to join us should contact the OIR Office and I will then contact them.
